Kenyan officials say they have identified a possible new type of Nigerian passport that could make it easier to travel to Nigeria without visas.
The Nigerian passport is being developed by an unnamed company in Africa.
In a bid to cut down on immigration fraud and terrorism, Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it has identified the new passport as one that would be issued for a person who has no other Nigerian passports.
Kenya has been struggling with a large influx of migrants from Nigeria, where the government is seeking to curb terrorism by encouraging repatriation of the nationals who have been convicted of terrorism offences.
Officials say the new passports would be the first in the world issued by a foreign company.
“We are seeking to establish a system of national identification cards that would make it possible for Nigerian nationals who are travelling abroad without visas to travel freely and without the need to carry an identity document, including the Nigerian national identity card,” Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Tshisekedi, said in a statement.
“The new Nigerian passports would replace the existing Nigerian national identification card, which has been in circulation for more than 40 years.”
Mr Tshizekedi added that the new Nigerian passport would be available for purchase in Kenya.
